The UC Davis Collegiate Soil Judging Team competed last Friday November 10th, 2023 against four other college teams (Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Humboldt, Fresno State, and New Mexico State University) in the annual Region 6 Collegiate Soil Judging Competition hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt. This was UC Davis' second year participating in the competition, and they placed 1st in the Group Judging category! Soil Judge Sara Weitzel placed in the top 10 for highest individual scores! Collegiate soil judging is a team sport where students are taught how to assess and classify soils according to national standards using professional tools and training from their coaches. Soil judging allows students to use their knowledge about soils in a practical way, determining the best land use and overall quality of the soil. These highly transferable skills prepare them for any jobs involving environmental assessment and critical thinking for their future careers. This significant achievement for the team inches them ever closer to participating in the national and international soil judging competitions! (Soil Judging Team members: Olivia Hernandez, Gabe Reeb, Petra Engstrom, Alma Gutierrez Camarillo, Ethan Pearah, Sara Weitzel, and Seth Whiteaker; Soil Judging Coaches: Suzette Santiago, Adolfo Coyotl, and Connie Wong)
