Australian Ultisol
Australian Ultisol This massive Red Earth is found east of Torrens Creek Australia in Queensland. That is a real freight train for scale. Here is a soil that is more than 5 meters thick in a region that has a little less rainfall than Davis. How does such a thick soil form in a semi-arid climate? Maybe it doesn't. Maybe this very deeply weathered soil was formed when the climate was wetter than today. Maybe it is exceptionally old. The bedrock from which the soil formed is hard when fresh. It must have taken some intense weathering to form this soil. There are lots of unanswered questions in soil science, that is one of the reasons it is an exciting field of study.
