Essay Guidelines

This writing assignment was created with a few objectives in mind:

. To make you a better writer. To write clearly, succinctly, and convincingly is one of the most important skills you will gain from your formal education.
. To give you a chance to explore something geographic that interests you, and structure your thinking about certain topics which you may not be familiar with.
. To give me a chance to get to know you better, or rather for me to know a differnt facet of yourself.

The format of the essay should be as follows:

. Name/Date
. A citation for the reading assignment, written APA style (see below)
. Paragraph summarizing reading.
. Title of mini-essay (be creative!)
. Mini Essay:
 - Introduction, including a thesis (what is the main point you want to make?)
 - Supporting paragraphs
 - Conclusion

This mini-essay can be persuasive (convince me of something) or expository (explain something to me). Narrative (story telling, maybe personel) can be included if it directly supports the thesis. The topic should be something that interests you that is connected to the assigned reading. Aim for clarity and readability. There's no need to use big words, nor is it imperative that the essay is long but it should have purpose.

Specifics:
. The assignment should be types in 11 point font and at least 1 page single spaced or 2 pages double spaced. There is no maximum.
. Check for spelling and grammar.
. Citations should be APA style.
