Restricted Electives

Your Restricted Electives (RE’s) offer you the opportunity to explore subjects of interest in greater depth. More specifically, 20 units of upper division courses (course numbers greater than 100), worth of self prescribed fun!

The process is simple:

  1. By the end of your 2nd year, or for upper division transfer students, your first quarter in the major, begin thinking about upper division courses that you would like to take as Restricted Electives.
    1. If you are overwhelmed by the many options and would like some suggestions, refer to the “Restricted Electives Suggested Course List” form attached below.
    2. Confirm that the courses you are considering are offered and could fit into your graduation plan.
    3. Keep in mind that if a course is only offered as P/NP (such as a two-unit seminar), it can still be taken as a Restricted Elective.
  2. Send an email to your Track Advisor (and cc Lacole) with 5-7 course options.
    1. You should include:
      1. Class title
      2. Course ID
      3. Number of units
      4. How this course is important in meeting your career goals
  3. Await an email confirmation from your Track Advisor stating that they approve the courses that you’ve selected
  4. Sometimes you aren’t able to take the classes you anticipated, if this is the case,
    1. You should:
      1. Find a similar class to what you wanted
      2. Make sure you are still achieving 20 units of RE
      3. Keep track of the classes you are actually taking for RE
  5. When you have completed your Restricted Elective; send another email to your Track Advisor (and cc Lacole)
    1. You should include (for the classes you actually took):
      1. Class title
      2. Course ID
      3. Number of units
      4. How this course was important in meeting your career goals
