Student Profiles

Name:Heather Throckmorton
Class Level: PhD 2nd year
Major: Soils and Biogeochemistry

Why did you select this major?
I was initially attracted to soil science because of its complexity; it integrates chemistry, biology, and Earth science in a unique way that allows me to learn about issues important to the environment and society.  I was specifically interested in working on the issue of the global carbon cycle and I found a great opportunity to work in Will Horwath’s Lab to research microbial carbon stabilization mechanisms in two contrasting ecosystems.  I was very impressed by the breadth and flexibility (and still am) of the Soils and Biogeochemistry program at UC Davis and I felt that this would be a perfect opportunity for me to pursue my academic and research interests.

Favorite course(s) and why?
I really enjoyed the soil chemistry and soil organic matter chemistry courses.  I am also currently taking a pedology literature discussion class which I find really interesting.  I enjoy reading about biogeochemical processes in soils and I enjoy the relaxing and stimulating discussion setting of these classes.

Best college experience so far?
I love doing field work in the Sierra Nevadas and Puerto Rico.  I also love working in the lab- my lab group is super fun and supportive and we have good times.

Extra-curricular activities?
I’m participating in the Engineers without Borders program at UCD.

Your advice to new students in this major?
UC Davis is a great place to be; the program is wonderful and the people are super supportive.  I’m sure no matter what your long-term goals, you will have many opportunities to fulfill them here.  Everyone in the department is exceptionally supportive and helpful, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What are your long-term goals and how do they relate to this major?
I love doing research and I love working with and educating people.  I’m still early on in my program, so I’m keeping an open mind about my career goals and how they may change throughout my time here.  This major is perfect for me because I’m sure no matter what direction I decide to go in the end, I will have built a strong foundation and have many opportunities after I graduate.

Do you have any additional comments regarding your experience as an LAWR student?
I am exceptionally grateful to have the opportunity to study soils in such a diverse and stimulating environment.
