As part of this year's reunion, we are asking everyone (attending or not) to make a tax deductible gift to the Thayer scholarship endowment. At present, the endowment provides income of about $1,000/year to support students taking the class. We would like to increase the endowment so that more students can be supported at a higher rate. Check payable details are on the flyer. For more information contact Randy Southard (rjsouthard@ucdavis.edu) or Mike Singer (mjsinger@ucdavis.edu).
Checks for the Thayer Fund can be made to the UC Davis Foundation and mailed to the above address.
Spread the word! Visit the web site for more info!

Thayer Scholarship helps students to take the summer field class.
Summer session for UC enrolled students who took SSC 105 in the summer of 2007 was $723. For non-UC students it was much more. Fortunately, the Jim Thayer SSC 105 endowment was able to help students pay for the class.
The Thayer SSC 105 endowment provides financial support to students who demonstrate academic promise, but have financial constraints that might prevent them from registering for the course. The Thayer endowment was made possible by generous contributions from Jim Thayer, his colleagues at CH2M HILL, alumni of the SSC 105 class, and friends of Jim Thayer. Jim was a member of the SSC 105 class of 1970, who established the fund prior to his death from cancer in 2001. He established this fund because of his love for his soil science profession and because he felt the summer class was the best class he ever took.
The Thayer scholarship was first awarded in 2006 and has now provided funds to five SSC 105 students. The first recipient was Laura Murphy, a Soils and Biogeochemistry graduate student. The recipients in 2007 were Hideomi Minoshima and Evelyne Ndiaye, Soils and Biogeochemistry graduate students, Leslie Peacock, an undergraduate Environmental and Resource Science major Soil Science minor, and Ayumi Shimokawa, an undergraduate from Boston University.
