Safety Training
Safety training is a critical component of any safety program. Everyone who is employed, housed, or is doing any kind of research in the department is required to undergo safety training at the beginning of their affiliation with LAWR.
Purpose of Safety Training:
1. To ensure a safe environment for
employee and others
2. To be in compliance with University
policy and State and Federal requirements
3. To make employees aware of potential
hazards and proper avoidance
4. To make employees aware of proper
reporting procedures for injuries and hazards
Types of Training Available:
1. For administrative staff members, IT staff, other career employees and graduate students that do not work in a chemical lab, there is a web-based training available. Begin here
2. For graduate students, post-docs,
PGRs, junior specialists, and other personnel who are
doing lab work, the first step is to go through the
web-based training for general safety matters. Begin
here. Before starting any kind of laboratory work,
they must either:
a. Take the EH&S class on chemical
safety (give copy of certificate to Dianne Louie)
b. Be trained in chemical safety matters,
including the chemical hygiene plan, by a qualified person
in his/her lab (give copy of training documentation
to Dianne Louie
c. Take a departmental lab safety training
session offered by Dianne Louie
For Student Assistants:
In addition to your lab’s own specific safety
training, an abbreviated version of the lab safety training
is available for student assistants who are closely
supervised. It is assumed that they are not responsible
for ordering chemicals, developing new methods, or for
dealing with chemical waste. For a copy of this training
form, click
here if located in PES, or here if in Veihmeyer Hall.
For Short-term Visitors in Laboratory:
For Visitors in your laboratory that are there for a
short duration (i.e., using one of your analytical instruments,
etc): In addition to your lab’s own specific safety
training, you can use the form titled "Laboratory Safety Training for Short-term Visitors." Click here if located in the PES Building, or here if you are housed in Veihmeyer Hall.
For Short-term Non-Lab Visitors:
For Visitors to LAWR who are not doing any lab work,
but will be only working with computers and/or is assigned
an office in one of the LAWR buildings –
Use the training form titled "Safety
Training for Short-term Visitors (Non-lab)"
In addition to the general safety training offered above, specialized training is also available. For example, if you are required to drive at least 10% of time, you are required to take the safe-driver class. If you work with any radioactive material, you need to take the radiation safety class. Ergonomics and back-care/lifting classes are also offered on a regular basis by EH&S.

All training of Standard Operating Procedures must
be documented (SOP
training documentation) If a safety net is used
in place of an SOP, this training must also be documented.
