1998 Field Excursion Announcement

FALL FIELD EXCURSION

The Pedology Lab in cooperation with the Soil Science Graduate Group and the Soils and Biogeochemistry program of the LAWR Department are pleased to invite persons in the Soil Science Graduate Group and faculty of the LAWR Department.

SOILS GRAD GROUP EXCURSION

IMPORTANT ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

FRIDAY (SEPT 11), 4 PM

HOAGLAND HALL 159

Hi everybody,

Owing to the grand time had by all on the last field trip (Spring 1998-Mojave Desert), there's a movement among graduate students and faculty to have at least one annual Soils Group field excursion. Many people who've been on past trips think it would be a great way for new students to get a view of the social and scientific landscape in the group, and to encourage students and faculty to interact more. With that in mind, please consider coming along on the fall trip! Here are the details:

DATES: September 24-27

FACULTY ORANIZER: Randy Southard

GENERAL VICINITY: Modoc Plateau (Northeastern California)

SOILS:

The Modoc Plateau is home to Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic rocks, which affords us the possibility of seeing soils developing on volcanic parent materials, among other things. [You may recall that there is an entire soil order devoted to soils characterized by development on volcanic parent materials.] An itinerary for the trip is posted on the web, attached to the Soil Science 220 course home page (choose Fall 1998). Here's the URL:

http:/lawr.ucdavis.edu/classes/ssc220/Modoc_98/itn98Fall.htm

Cost: $50 for current students and faculty $0 for NEW soils grad students

**IMPORTANT ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING for interested parties on Friday,

September 11 at 4 pm in Hoagland Hall 159.

Hope you can make it! If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact me

or Randy Southard.
