Guidelines for Herb Garden Design Project
Culinary & Medicinal Herbs
PLB & ERS 140
Dr. Caroline Bledsoe

1.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT: Each student is expected to prepare her or his own individual herb garden design. The garden should have a theme, not be a simple collection of herb plants. Examples - an herb tea garden, a culinary garden, a medicinal garden, a fragrant herb garden, a tropical herb garden, a medieval herb garden, etc.

2.

DUE DATE & GRADING: No later than 5pm Friday June 1st. A maximum of 50 points out of a total of 450 points for the class. Grading will emphasize creativity of design, depth of understanding of individual herb requirements for growth, complexity and number of plants used, artistic presentation, and resourcefulness in finding interesting references

3.

CONTENTS OF PROJECT:

(a)

Two diagrams or drawings or sketches of the garden. The 2-dimensional ‘flat’ drawing (scale of 1"=1') drawn on a large (~24"x36") sheet of graph paper (available at the UCD Book Store). Scale and dimensions should be indicated (cm and meters preferred), as well as locations of plants. The second drawing/sketch is a 3-dimensional perspective, showing what you expect the garden to look like. There are many ways to give perspective, including cut-out pictures from magazines or newspapers.

(b)

Plant list keyed by number to diagram, with scientific name, common name and family name for each plant. At least 15 herbs we have studied must be included. Other herbs may be added.

(c)

A short (3-4 page) description of the garden, including its’ theme, location, and environmental requirements (climate, soils, light, water, etc.) for each herb species.

(d)

List of References (5 minimum; not including your textbook) about plants in your garden.
